Here are the relevant contents of the most interesting support call, in reverse thread ( end to start )

I just recently bought this 1 Gbit adapter, approximately 6 months ago, and have been informed that its not being supported. The adapter works with all other OS’s that I know of, its just Microsoft and Intel that have the problem.

I have yet to contact Microsoft, and probably won’t , one of these is enough for a week.
.
The adapter works in the system in all other scenarios and OS’s but not windows 7 or windows 8. ( win 8 verified not working) It even works for windows server 2008.The adapter is limited to 100 Mb in operation in win 8 ( its a Gb adapter )

This is a big problem in today’s world where speed is really important.

This is in regards of your Service Ticket 8000683769.

Please note that the adapter is currently active since there are many customers using legacy systems based on Windows* XP or Windows* 2000 who need a replacement for their current 100 or 1000Mbps adapters based on PCI or PCI-X for which the use of the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter is a perfectly valid solution.

Additionally these adapters work with no issues using other Operating Systems such as Linux*or VMware*(As you clearly stated in your first contact).

Based on this there is no reason for Intel to discontinue the adapter or prevent it from being sold if it is used within proper specifications and supported Operating Systems.

By no means is Intel providing false expectations in regards of the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter intended market since:

-As you are perfectly aware, PCI-X is not a current technology and we are not advertising the adapter as such.

-There is enough public information posted on the Intel Website in regards of the Operating Systems supported by the adapter precisely to prevent situations like the one you have.

If the misunderstanding about the compatibility of the adapter with recent Operating Systems such as Windows* 8 was caused by your vendor, we would strongly recommend contacting them to clarify the situation.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello Sergio,

Sorry to have to contradict you, but if the product was developed 8 years ago, why is it still being sold as a “Current Technology” product. I bought it only a short while ago, so it “should not be being sold to customers” – ie an out of date product is being sold to customers.

So, Intel should not be selling out of date products through its distribution. In today’s world of just in time everything, there is no way that this product should be available at all for sale, so somewhere in your channels, I got shortchanged.

So my suggestion would be, fix the situation somehow. I do not go around buying old technology. I expected something that was current when I bought it, not 8 years out of date.

thank you
Paul

Hello Paul,

This is in regards of your Service Ticket 8000683769.

Please note that as stated on our previous contact, the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter is a mature product developed eight years prior to the release of your Operating System, based on a technology (PCI-X) which is no longer used by most of the current adapter manufacturers in the market, the assumption that the adapter was meant to be compatible with all the newer Operating Systems is incorrect.

It is recommended not only with network adapters but with any computer component to check compatibility with the Operating System prior to any purchase or integration to avoid this kind of situations.

On this regards we consider that there is enough information publicly available about the Operating Systems supported by the Intel Adapters for the customers to determine their best integration options.

In the case of the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter, the product brief states which Operating Systems are supported:

https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/desktops/intel-pro-1000-gt-desktop-adapter-datasheet.html

And there is another article on which clearly states that for the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter Windows* 8 it’s only supported via inbox drivers provided by Microsoft*:

Is my Intel® Ethernet Adapter supported in Microsoft Windows 8*?

http://www.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/sb/CS-033693.htm

“In-box support:

Driver and software updates are not planned for adapters with only in-box support. These adapters cannot be updated using automated or manual methods.

Intel® PROSet for Windows* Device Manager and Advanced Network Services (ANS) driver for teaming and VLANS are not included with in-box support. “

We would recommend contacting your vendor for further assistance.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Sergio G.

Hi Sergio,

As a customer I can reasonably expect a recently purchased piece of hardware to be compatible with Microsoft products that were available at the time of purchase. This question though is only really valid if you use Windows 8 yourself, if you don’t, please pass on to a service representative who does.

thank you
Paul

Hello Paul,

This is in regards of your Service Ticket number: 8000683769.

As stated on the previous contact, a replacement of the product is based on the certainty by the technical support staff though troubleshooting that there is a physical damage or manufacturing error that will prevent it from functioning properly.

The product is not eligible for warranty since you clearly stated that the adapter is working fine on VMware* VSphere.

Also note that in the event of an issue that may require replacing the product, it will be the exact model and revision as the one that you currently have, there is no option for exchanging the product with a different one.

Please note that the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter was released since 2004, by the time that Windows* 8 was released Intel had already moved forward to the new PCIe technology with more than three different families of adapters fully supported on the newer Operating Systems, there were never any plans to support the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter in Windows* 8 apart from the inbox drivers provided by Microsoft*.

The usage of the product on a non supported Operating System is not considered a product issue; therefore we would strongly recommend you contacting your vendor for further assistance.

Hello Sergio,

When I bought the product I was not/never informed that it was not compatible with Windows 7 x64, or Windows 8 which was out at the time. I expect the product to be replaced.

Please let me know.
thank you

Hello Paul,

Thank you again for contacting Intel Technical Support.

Please note that Intel honors the warranty in the event that a product is proven to be defective by the technical support personnel.

Once approved, it will be replaced with the exact model and revision as the defective product.

In this case the adapter is in working conditions as you stated on your previous contact, the use of a non supported Operating System is not considered a product defect.

Exchanging your existing adapter with a different model is something that you may need to discuss with your vendor.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you for contacting Intel Technical Support.

I understand that you have some questions about the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter and Windows* 8.

Please note that the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter support for Windows* 8 is limited to inbox drivers provided by Microsoft* only.

Currently there are no plans to develop Windows* 8 drivers for the Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter.
